Lawrence P. Ward, EdD President University of Hartford
Lawrence P. Ward became the University of Hartford’s seventh president on July 1, 2024.
A dynamic leader in the national higher education landscape, Ward arrived at UHart after a successful 10-year tenure at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he served as vice president for learner success and dean of campus life.
During his initial year at UHart, President Ward has furthered the University’s deep commitment to student success, including investments in career and professional development, support services, and campus facilities. He has also focused on positioning the University as a strategic partner and leader in the economic and educational vitality of the Greater Hartford region and the state of Connecticut.
Challenging the campus community to reimagine excellence, he is committed to making the most of UHart’s connections and momentum. This includes strengthening ties across industry, with programs like Scholars of Excellence, which just extended scholarship offers, funded in partnership with Stanley Black & Decker, to top students from 29 towns in the Greater Hartford region. Ward has also established regular meetings with elected leaders in the area, welcoming constituents and communities to campus for dialogue and programming. In March, more than a dozen Connecticut state agencies visited UHart to recruit students—the first time the State of Connecticut has held a career event on a college campus.
discover their own stories and identify their own goals, and to compel them to have the courage to speak up and speak out.
Prior to his decade at Babson, Ward served as associate dean for academic programs at American University’s Kogod School of Business in Washington, D.C. Previously, he was director at PRS, Inc., an organizational development consulting firm, and a health care account executive for Aetna.
Over the course of the current decade, Ward has received the Distinguished Alumni Award and William B. Castetter Alumni Award of Merit from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (2023); been recognized as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Business Leaders of Color, Charles River Chamber of Commerce, MetroWest, Massachusetts (2020 and 2023); and been honored with the Pillar of the Profession Award by the NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (2021).
He says his personal mission as an academic leader is to shine a light on that which makes others feel capable, seen, and heard, to be both a sounding board and a springboard, to help people discover their own stories and identify their own goals, and to compel them to have the courage to speak up and speak out.
Ward earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Connecticut, his master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Michigan, and his doctorate in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania, where he holds a faculty appointment in the Graduate School of Education.
An engaging and popular speaker and panelist, Ward frequently makes addresses on how to help individuals and organizations reach maximum potential for success. He says his personal mission as an academic leader is to shine a light on that which makes others feel capable, seen, and heard, to be both a sounding board and a springboard, to help people
He has also held several higher education leadership positions, including membership on the NCAA Board of Governors, chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council, and trustee at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut.
Greater Hartford is home for President Ward, who grew up in Vernon and has deep family roots in the area tracing back to the 1940s. He and his wife, Katerie, an elementary school teacher, reside in Hartford’s west end and are proud parents of two young adults.
David A. Gordon ’75 Strategy and Business Consultant
Doctor of Humane Letters
Through the years, the University of Hartford has awarded honorary degrees to distinguished scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and dignitaries.
David A. Gordon’s professional career includes roles in public education, information technology, executive leadership, and consulting. After graduating from the University of Hartford, Gordon taught eighth-grade mathematics in Bethel, Connecticut. He then transitioned to business—first at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in information technology, followed by Cigna Corporation, where he held positions in information technology, national accounts management, e-commerce, and product development.
Gordon also served as president of Trilog Corporation and Choicelinx Corporation, both Cigna subsidiaries. Later, he joined the executive team of ConnectiCare as senior vice president of strategy and product innovation. He is currently a strategy and business development consultant for earlystage companies.
From 2008 to 2024, Gordon was a member of the University of Hartford Board of Regents, serving a fiveyear term as board chair from 2018 to 2023. As chair, he oversaw accomplishments of significance, including the construction and opening of the Center for Student Success and the Hursey Center for Advanced Engineering and Health Professions. He led the Board during the University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and recently served on the Presidential Search Committee. Gordon’s commitment to the University extends beyond his regent tenure; he has chaired the Board of Visitors for both the Barney School of Business and the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions.
Gordon received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from UHart’s College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions and holds a master’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He is married to Danuta Syp Gordon ’15, an accomplished artist, vice president of the Hartford Art School Endowment, Inc., and an alumna of the Hartford Art School. They have two adult children and four grandchildren.
Marion A. Bills Scholarship
and Sciences
The Marion A. Bills Scholarship is presented biennially to a deserving UHart senior who wishes to pursue graduate study at a top university in Great Britain.
Evan J. Blass has been one of the most active seniors on and off the UHart campus, a pattern that has followed him throughout his entire school career in support of his professional ambition. Blass plans to become an attorney focused on special education law and activism on behalf of gaining full educational access for all. With a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a minor in sociology, and a full complement of advocacy experience, research skills, and strategic internships, his objective seems clearly within reach.
A 4.0-GPA student, Blass reached his degree goal in an accelerated timeframe and is looking forward to overseas study to add to his interest in, devotion to, and knowledge of criminal justice, sociology, and how the intersection of the two plays a role in modern society.
“Evan embodies the intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and personal character the University likes to reward. His academic journey, research and study agenda, career aspirations, and commitment to the community are extraordinary,” says Kelly McGeever, associate professor and director of the criminal justice program. “He has consistently demonstrated that rare mix of brilliance, compassion, and ambition.”
Blass founded and presided over the Pre-Law Society at UHart, whose mission is to provide resources, networking, and support for students interested in entering the legal profession. Other on-campus roles have been just as significant, including service as managing editor of the student news site The Informer, and his student ambassadorship for both A&S and the Honors program.
Blass was a legislative intern for the Connecticut General Assembly, where he received exceptional reviews for his work researching and drafting bill proposals. He was asked to stay on once the internship concluded to serve as a policy researcher and communications specialist. Blass also served as a mentor for a local organization called Connectikids, which provides role models for students in the Hartford public elementary school system.

Woody Doane
Professor of Sociology Hillyer College
Humphrey R. Tonkin Award
This award honors a full-time faculty member for scholarly and/or artistic creativity.
Woody Doane, professor of sociology in the social sciences department of Hillyer College, has more than three decades of exemplary scholarship behind him that have made an important contribution to the sociological study of race, ethnicity, and racism. Along the way, he has given hundreds of students a solid foundation on which to build their own careers.
Doane’s academic domain overflows with numerous subfields, but he has the organizational skills, as well as the curiosity and dedication, to embrace each one fully. They include, among others, race and racial discourse, ethnicity, racism, dominant group ethnicity, colorblind racial ideology, white nationalism, and humanist sociology.
Such broad scholarship is impressively reflected in the scope of his published work, which includes books, book chapters, articles, and essays—more than 40 to date.
“Beyond his impressive publication record, Dr. Doane has been a dedicated teacher and mentor, whose mentorship is characterized by a commitment to fostering critical thinking and encouraging students to apply their learning to realworld issues,” says Melinda S. Miceli, associate professor of sociology and chair of the social sciences department at Hillyer College. “His contributions to sociology, particularly in the study of race and racism, have had an indelible impact, and his career continues to inspire his peers and the next generation of scholars.”
Doane has doctoral and master’s degrees in sociology from the University of New Hampshire. He has held several administrative positions at Hillyer since 1999, including associate dean for academic administration and chair of the department of social sciences. Among the awards with which he has been recognized throughout his extraordinary academic, research, and publishing career are the Founders Award for Scholarship and Service from the American Sociological Association and the Lee Founders Award for Scholarship and Service from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Doane has also delivered more than 90 presentations at renowned conferences and institutions.
Roy E. Larsen Award
Honoring a full-time faculty member for excellence in teaching and contributions to university life.
Carrie Koffman, professor of saxophone at The Hartt School, counts among her many successes seeing students of hers win 26 concerto competitions at all five universities where she has taught.
In addition to teaching, lecturing, and working closely with each and every student, she manages to keep a hectic on-stage schedule of her own, having performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and in 17 countries on six continents. A review in Fanfare Magazine of one performance called Koffman’s playing “suave, subtly nuanced, and technically secure in its every gesture,” and another described her “melting tone and touching sensitivity.” Music Web International described her talent as “brilliant and dauntless.”
“Carrie is a gifted studio teacher whom students admire very much,” says Warren Haston, associate professor and chair of music education. “She has contributed to the quality of university life in a number of significant ways beyond mentoring and teaching. It is the above-and-beyond commitment that has earned her such a well-deserved reputation.”
Koffman often refers to herself not just as a teacher of instruments—but as a teacher of listening. Learning to listen is a fundamental part of her technique, and one she integrates into her studio and technique classes, along with mindfulness and communication development.
After earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in saxophone performance from the University of North Texas, Koffman held positions as saxophone lecturer at the Yale School of Music and Boston University, and assistant professor of saxophone at Penn State and the University of New Mexico.
Along with teaching and performing, she enjoys bringing live music to nontraditional music venues, often giving impromptu performances at such places as cathedrals and churches. Koffman is a founding faculty member of the American Saxophone Academy, an annual educational program designed for advanced college students.

Hillyer College
Donald W. Davis University Interdisciplinary Studies Award
Presented annually to a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the University Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
Ju-Yong Ha, assistant professor of music in the Humanities Department at Hillyer College, teaches courses that demonstrate and embody his commitment to exploring the intersections of music, culture, and social activism. By doing so, he provides students with a comprehensive understanding of what can otherwise be highly complex themes.
Ha’s achievements beyond the classroom are numerous and equally noteworthy, including his directorship of the New York Sanjo Festival & Symposium. His history with publications, presentations, and cultural ambassadorships further underscores his dedication to interdisciplinary studies.
“Dr. Ha’s effectiveness as an interdisciplinary teacher and scholar has profoundly impacted students and colleagues at UHart. His innovative approach to teaching and ability to integrate diverse disciplines have enriched the learning experience,” says Margaret R. Tarampi, director of University Interdisciplinary Studies and associate professor in the Department of Psychology. “His commitment has made a lasting impact on our institution and will continue to influence future generations of scholars.”
With a doctorate in musical arts from the City University of New York and a master’s degree in music from the University of Hartford, Ha has developed a broad spectrum of specialties for his classroom, research, writing, and presentation work. This includes contemporary composition, Asian Diaspora and performing arts, music and gender, traditional Korean music, improvisation, music and spirituality, and K-pop.
Exploring the intersections of music, culture, and social activism, emphasizing the importance of globalism and cultural exchange, and sharing the role of music and art in shaping social and political identities are among Ha’s professional objectives. This is seen, as well, in his creation of several unique courses, including The Silk Road: Music, Art, Culture, and Identity.
Ha has also procured numerous grants to support music festivals and other culture-enriching events on behalf of students, the University, and the Greater Hartford community.
Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Award
Caryn Christensen
Associate Professor of Psychology
College of Arts and Sciences
Honoring a full-time faculty member for sustained service to the University.
Caryn Christensen, associate professor of psychology at the College of Arts and Sciences, has served the University consistently and in numerous ways since joining the faculty in 1991. In addition to teaching and researching, she has served as a member, co-chair, or chair of many programs, task forces, and committees, making her one of the busiest and most vital members of the University’s academic community.
“Caryn always puts her full effort into all her service work because she cares deeply about UHart. I’ve never known her to refuse when asked to serve in a critical support role,” says James Shattuck, associate provost for academic affairs. “She puts all the time necessary into handling her jobs well, and also brings a great work ethic, strong intellect, and compassionate personality to everything she does.”
Christensen holds a doctoral degree from Ohio University and a bachelor’s degree from St. Lawrence University, both in experimental psychology. Her research focuses on the psychology of decision making in applied settings, primarily in the clinical or medical space. She does not, however, limit herself by any measure to a single handful of topics but enjoys hearing about, exploring, and discussing thematic issues beyond her core areas. As such, Christensen eagerly welcomes the opportunity to provide research consultation or guidance that benefits students and colleagues alike.
Among her many administrative roles at UHart have been interim associate dean of student services in the College of Arts and Sciences, interim dean of undergraduate learning, and, for four years, chair of the department of psychology. Prior to arriving at UHart, Christensen was an assistant professor of medical education at the University of Illinois.
She has been active in both publishing and conference activities. Christensen has contributed to books such as Decision Making in Health Care: Theory, Psychology, and Applications and Informal Reasoning in Education. She has also presented at conferences, including those organized by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the Atlantic Center for Learning Communities
